The idea of an intervention can be off-putting to some. It gives the idea of interfering or meddling in the business of others. Actually, an intervention can be thought of as a session where addiction is discussed and treatment options are mediated by a professional interventionist. Addiction is not a lifestyle or phase that will pass with time. Recently, veteran actor Burt Reynolds as publicly announced his enrollment in a rehabilitation program for prescription drugs. His act is noble as he hopes that this act will influence others to seek help for their addictions as it is not a problem that will go away on its own.

Alcohol is a toxic drug, as it is easily available and consumption is encouraged in many social situations. Addiction can strike anyone from all different walks of life. Even pregnant mothers are not prone to alcoholism. From fetal alcohol syndrome to drunk driving, we may think that alcoholics are selfish. In reality, their judgment is clouded from extended alcohol abuse. These are the individuals who need the most help as their actions can be a danger to themselves and others around them.
