Structuring a Drug Intervention, an Alcoholism Intervention or a Crisis Intervention

Drug Intervention

A drug intervention is used in cases of drug addiction. Drug addiction is very serious and should not be taken lightly. The goal of the drug intervention is to assist the individual in recognizing that they are suffering from a disease and that without treatment they are risking their lives and their physical and emotional health. By providing them with encouraging and supportive words, family and friends can help persuade the individual to participate in a drug addiction recovery program. It is very important that those who are present at the intervention do not attack or judge the individual. Feelings of love and support are much more beneficial in the process of recovering from drug addiction.

Alcoholism Intervention

An alcoholism intervention addresses victims of alcoholism. Similar to a drug addiction intervention, an alcoholism intervention intends to help the victim understand that they are suffering from a disease and that they require professional assistance if they wish to recover. There are a number of alcohol recovery programs that family and friends of an alcoholic should consider when preparing for the intervention. The intervention itself should facilitate the individuals entrance into a treatment program.

Crisis Intervention

A crisis intervention is used for victims of trauma. Individuals who experience traumatic events such as domestic violence, sexual abuse, crime, suicide, terrorism, a natural disaster, etc., are at an increased risk for developing post-traumatic stress disorder. Some of the essential components of a crisis intervention include psychological first aid, survivor needs assessment and empathetic support, and recovery intervention services. It is extremely important that a crisis intervention be staged as soon as possible in order to decrease the individuals risk for developing post-traumatic stress disorder. The goal is that by confronting what has happened to him or her, the individual will be able to move forward past the trauma and regain strength.
