Overcoming Denial: Drug Addiction Intervention and Alcoholism Intervention

When to Use an Intervention

The first step in recovering from drug addiction and/or alcoholism is first admitting that the problem exists. For many people, this can be the most difficult step. What usually happens in cases of drug addiction and/or alcoholism, is that the individual knows that they have a problem. They recognize their weakness, but don’t know what to do about it. That being said, the first stage of drug addiction and alcoholism is denial. We all like to believe that we are invincible. Admitting defeat makes us weak. Therefore, denial is a common tactic used by individuals suffering from drug addiction and/or alcoholism. This is where an intervention can be of use.

Drug Addiction Intervention

Informing a drug addict of the severity of his or her problem can result in agitation and anger. Nobody likes to be told that they have failed or that they are weak. For this reason, it is important to remain non-judgmental and encouraging when confronting an individual about his or problems. A drug addiction intervention can be difficult but with proper planning and proper implementation it can be the right solution.

Alcoholism Intervention

Similar to a drug addiction intervention is an alcoholism intervention. It is very difficult to make a drug addict or an alcoholic face the realization that they have a problem. This is when an alcoholism intervention can come into play. Alcoholism interventions have an overwhelmingly high success rate. The ultimate goal of an alcoholism intervention is to encourage the individual to seek treatment. It is recommended that prior to the intervention, extensive research is done on proper treatment centers and alcohol recovery programs. There are different ways to approach an alcoholism intervention, however what should remain consistent is the manner in which it is staged. Everyone present must remain supportive and encouraging.
