Beginning the Path Towards Recovery: Drug Intervention, Alcoholism Intervention, and Crisis Intervention

Drug Intervention

The intervention process varies depending on the type of behavior the individual is displaying. For individuals suffering from a severe drug addiction, a drug intervention should be staged. A drug intervention aims to inform an individual of the destructive implications of his or her behavior and assist him or her in breaking free of this negative dependency. The intervention can help an individual understand that he or she has a disease that will eventually destroy them if they choose not to get help. The goal is that by educating the individual on his or her behavior and the negative impact it is having on their life and the lives of those around them, they may be inclined to receive treatment.

Alcoholism Intervention

An alcoholism intervention is geared towards individuals suffering from alcoholism. The success rate for alcoholism interventions is extremely high—upwards of 95%. This means that more than 95% of individuals who receive an alcoholism intervention go into an alcohol treatment program as a result. Alcohol treatment programs often include one on one counseling, group therapy, physical activity, participation in a 12-step program, and education. These programs help individuals break their dependency on alcohol and restructure their life in a positive way.

Crisis Intervention

Lastly, a crisis intervention is targeted towards victims of traumatic events. These victims either suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder or are at risk for gaining post-traumatic stress disorder. Traumatic events such as sexual abuse, domestic abuse, a natural disaster, a car accident, attempted suicide, violence, etc., can shape a persons life thereafter. A crisis intervention uses services such as psychological first aid, survivor needs assessment and empathetic support, and recovery intervention to assist the individual in confronting what happened to them and moving past it.
